Master degree in Architecture and PhD in Urban and Regional Planning (2016/17, University of Palermo – TU Berlin), since 2020 she has a post-doctoral researcher contract at the ICS, Institute of Social Science of the University of Lisbon. Her PhD dissertation titled, “Conflicting citizenship and (re)active zones in the urban areas: confronting the cases of Berlin and Rome – Policies and practices for defining processes of “reclaiming” urban public spaces”, examines insurgent reclaiming of urban public spaces in two cities with rich histories of social struggle and grassroots transitional space reappropriation, such as squatting, offering valuable insights into urban activism and spatial politics. The analysis focuses on whether insurgent reclaiming of urban spaces influences policymaking and urban agendas. It examines how these pioneering practices are shaped by institutions and dominant discourses, aiming to understand when real negotiation with radical participation becomes possible.
She was an active member of SqEK (Squatting European Kollective) from 2014 to 2020, contributing chapters to their book “The Urban Politics of Squatters’ Movements” (2018). Her work focused on comparative analysis of squatter movement institutionalization across European cities and the experience in Rome’s housing and social centers movements.
Since 2017, she has broadened her research to analyse Barcelona’s local social movements against progressive privatization of public assets. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, she shifted focus to study emerging housing groups like Neighbourhoods’ Unions, exploring their unique organizational dynamics. Her ongoing research aims to understand how grassroots movements shape housing policies and influence decision-making by public servants and political actors.
She served as co-editor with Simone Tulumello for a special issue in the peer-reviewed international journal Partecipazione e Conflitto, titled “Housing Crisis and Social Mobilization in Times of COVID-19.”
She also co-authored a forthcoming book chapter with Simone Tulumello titled “A paz, o pão, …, saúde educação: a habitação, a grande ausência do estado social democrático”. Their book chapter will be featured in a publication commemorating the 50th anniversary of Portugal’s revolution. It offers reflections on Portugal’s housing struggles and crisis, briefly reconstructing the evolution of social movements and housing policies since the revolution in 1974, analysing how the original revolutionary values and claims and the struggles connected to the right to housing have transformed over time.
